Sport in Childhood: Much More Than Just Exercise

sport in childhood

Movement is about growing, learning, and building a healthier life.

Physical activity is essential during childhood. Running, jumping, playing, dancing, swimming, or riding a bike not only helps children stay active but also supports the development of their bones, muscles, coordination, and balance.

As a pediatric orthopedic surgeon, I believe it is important to remember that movement is an essential part of healthy growth.

🦴 Strong Bones and Muscles

Physical activity promotes muscle development, helps strengthen bones, and improves coordination, balance, and agility. Weight-bearing activities, such as running and jumping, are particularly beneficial for bone health.

In addition, moving regularly helps prevent a sedentary lifestyle and encourages healthy habits from an early age.

🧠 A Healthy and Strong Mind

Sport does more than strengthen the body. It also helps develop concentration, confidence, and self-esteem. It teaches children how to manage frustration, persevere through challenges, and appreciate small achievements.

Through physical activity, children learn to overcome challenges, trust in their abilities, and discover that effort pays off.

❤️ Learning Values for Life

Respect, perseverance, teamwork, discipline, and personal growth are valuable lessons that go far beyond physical exercise.

Sport also creates opportunities for children to connect with others, share experiences, learn to work as a team, and understand that making mistakes is part of learning.

🌱 Building Healthy Habits for Life

There is no single ideal sport for every child. What matters most is finding an activity that motivates them, suits their age and abilities, and brings them joy.

For younger children, free play and spontaneous movement are essential. As they grow, they can gradually take part in organized activities while respecting their interests and individual needs.

It is not about competing, winning, or being the best. It is about having fun, staying active, and making movement a source of health and well-being.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Advice for Families

Let’s encourage active play, daily movement, and physical activity from an early age. Let’s give our children opportunities to move, explore, learn, and have fun, while also setting a good example through our own habits.

Because growing strong means more than developing healthy muscles and bones. It also means building a strong mind, gaining confidence, learning to face challenges, and enjoying the journey.
